Okay, it’s been a while since i penned on own words on here, but i heard about this story over the weekend i would love to hear your thoughts. i’ll reserve my personal thoughts about fraternities and sororities for the time being. but with the economic situation of the country and the socio-economic status of many black americans, do you think that it is right for organizations (specifically greek in this case) to spend money on things that do not benefit the communities in which they claim to serve?

As a greek letter member, i feel that there is a thin line between what’s good for the community and what’s good for the organization. For example, the Alphas have raised hundreds of millions of dollars (i believe) on constructing a monument for Martin Luther King Jr. You could justify that act benefits both the community and the organization but also consider all that money raised could be used for buying books for inner city students. It reminds me of the case of the former president of Chicago State university where she was caught buying personal items with the school credit card but managed to pay off the balances with her own money. I feel if you have to resort to those methods, that’s an abuse of power and should be dealt with as such.
